After a notable 68-point win over the University of New Hampshire last season, the Boston University women’s swimming and diving team posted a 158-141 victory over the Wildcats on Saturday at Competition Pool at BU’s Fitness and Recreation Center.
The Terriers also fell to Northeastern University, 154-145.
NU and UNH displayed marked improvement from last year’s tri-meet, when BU (6-3) swept the Wildcats and took all individual events against the Huskies. Saturday, the Terriers fought vigorously for their eight first-place wins.
The women claimed their first win in the 1,000-yard freestyle, with junior Christina Ruggiero touching the wall at 10:26.89. Ruggiero finished 1.65 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Emily Sutliff (NU).
BU junior Eve Kinsella took first in three individual races: the 200-yard freestyle (1:54.52), 100-yard freestyle (53.07) and 200-yard IM (2:08.42).
“She has a mental toughness to succeed in these key races,” said BU coach Bill Smyth. “She was even, or even behind, with 50 yards remaining in her 200-yard freestyle. She had a fabulous, much-needed win.”
Sophomore Brigette O’Shaughnessy lost the 200-yard IM to Kinsella by a mere .05 seconds.
“Eve made up her mind to do everything she could do to win,” Smyth said.
O’Shaughnessy later won the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:22.47. BU fell just short of a victory in the 200-yard backstroke, as UNH’s Amy Perreault (2:06.94) outlasted Terrier freshman Sarah Doersam (2:08.98).
The Terriers dominated the diving events, claiming two victories. Junior Tess Waresmith won both the 1-meter diving (333.00) and 3-meter diving events (317.36).
“Tess has not been beaten at all this year on either diving board,” Smyth said. “We are extremely happy with her this year. She seems to be getting better and better as the year goes on.”
BU ended the tri-meet by securing first place in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
