The last two years have been a hell of a ride. Through Student Union, CAS Forum and other groups on campus, I’ve been lucky enough to experience working with many students and having mentors along the way. I’ve seen how any student really can make an impact at Boston University. With graduation coming, some of these mentors are leaving. With next year coming into view, I wanted to ask something of the entire student body.
During the Union presidential campaign, I was thrilled to see that apathy at BU truly was a myth. Hundreds of students talked about issues that affect everyone here. The level of dedication students have shown is incredible. But as much as we want change, there is only one way to make it happen. We must unite students from across campus in an unprecedented way. The Union must be reinvigorated on all levels, but it can only happen by all of us working together.
To returning members, I want you to know that increased transparency, communication and an equal share of responsibilities are going to make sure everyone knows how critical they are to the process of advocacy. Union initiatives must reflect the efforts of all members, because without you all, none of it can happen.
To students considering joining the Union, I want you to know about how a new outlook will change how you can get involved. Let’s say you’re interested in working on a single issue. Rather than feeling you have to join a committee, the Union will work to build a large number of task forces to focus on specific issues. This is not to limit anyone; rather, it is a way that those with little time or those hesitant about joining can start to see what Union is about, take part in real change and become encouraged to get even more involved over the semester.
To students who have been skeptical about the Union, I want you to know that you will be seeing Union members everywhere. We’ll be there, from the BU Beach to the dining halls to Marsh Plaza. The energy and excitement returning Union members feel about the coming year is something I want everyone to feel. Whatever your interests, I ask you to give the Union a chance and see how you can change the very problems you face every day. I have no doubt that the challenges ahead will be difficult.
But as I think about the efforts of past Union members and what they’ve done, I can only think that we have a common goal that connects every plan or proposal or task force or committee. This is our university, and it’s time we take on the challenge of making change happen right now. It’s time to stop saying what BU could be and make it what it should be. It’s up to us to build on the past and take our efforts even further. Next year is our year and a new time for the Union and BU. The only question is: Will you, the person reading this, be part of it?
