As a recent graduate of the College of Communication, I’m happy to see the gay rights movement in full swing both within the Boston University community and in the state of Massachusetts.
Students speaking out against the Catholic Church’s hypocritical stance on homosexualty and taking a stand at the statehouse as the legislature attempts to revoke rights authorized by the courts is truly important. I am proud to see current students being politically active.
During my time, John Silber ruled with ignorance and dissolved the gay-straight alliance at BU Academy. I encourage students there to regroup in the midst of this extraordinary civil rights movement.
I now live in upstate New York working as a television reporter and as a member of the media I keep constant pulse of the latest at BU and in Boston and I’d like students to know they have the full support of alumni like myself as they move forward in this movement.
However, I’ve learned living in a very conservative area that the gay rights movement has only just begun and the efforts to eliminate ignorance and prejudice are far from over.
With that in mind I applaud the efforts and constant dialogue occuring in the Boston University community and ask students and alumni to stay strong in the face of discrimination.
