Dear Editor,
Tonight’s performace of Margaret Cho (Progamming Council’s “kickoff event”) only proves how “Springfest” is going to be a “Spring-bust.” Fortunately, I won’t be around to see it- I’m headed to UCONN’s “Spring Weekend” instead, where they will be hosting Kanye West and Ludacris.
Please make it clear that I do not want to undermine PC’s hard work in any way. Many, many thanks to the students of BU who brought a big name like Margaret Cho to campus. I can’t imagine how much work went into planning such an event. However, I have a feeling the students are not responsible for the lameness of Springfest. I have a pretty good idea who is to blame for that.
Do you know what a “Springfest” is like at other colleges? One event is “Big Fish” on the BU beach, which is great, but I thought a movie on the BU beach was for “Fall Welcome.” I guess we’re running out of ideas. (And when we do come up with great ones, SAO stops us in our tracks. Does Mardi Gras on Bay State ring any bells?)
My frustration comes out of the rough-draft performance I attended tonight. During the show, Cho referred to her act as a practice for her real tour, and to bear with her because she didn’t know what was coming next in the act any more than the audience did. Now maybe BU has turned me into a comedic snob (tonight was quite a far jump from Jim Breuer and Tracey Morgan), but when was the last show you paid for in which the perfomer looked at his/her notes frequently throughout the performance?
Now, whether BU got a “reduced rate” for Cho’s experimental act is completely irrevelant (although I am interested to find out exactly how much BU paid her to use us as guinea pigs for her new jokes), but I am sure she still pocketed a good amount of dough. Let’s be honest, she had to make something, charging us $10 a ticket AND having it funded by our undergraduate student fee. Partially, anyway.
I know this may sound bitter, especially as a former Union Senator and strong believer in BU spirit, but I am frustrated with BU events such as “Springfest.” SAO is just attaching a catchy phrase to a week of events you could find at any college during a regular week of a school year. Let’s face it, the closest BU is going to come to a real “Springfest” is South Campus on Marathon Monday.
