New to campus? Here are some activities and events to check out at the beginning of the new semester.
First Year Student Outreach Project (August 26-30)
FYSOP is a great way for freshmen to discover the city while serving the community they will call home. This week-long community service program sends groups of freshmen and upperclassmen leaders into different areas of Boston to work with community partners in various fields. There’s still time to sign up for this program, which takes place a week before regular move-in.
Splash (September 7)
Splash is the place to go to learn about all the extracurriculars Boston University has to offer. This huge event on Nickerson Field features booths for everything from Greek life to comedy groups, from sports clubs to activist groups, as well as food, games and giveaways.
Weeks of Welcome (September)
BU hosts many events in the first few weeks of the semester to welcome students back. Previous years have featured a bingo night, a “drive-in” movie at Nickerson Field, an ice cream social and a comedy show. Last year’s comedy show featured Vanessa Bayer and Alex Moffat of SNL.
BU Ice Hockey (Late August-March)
Go to a hockey game to show off your Terrier pride. Sitting in the student section will give freshmen a chance to learn a few of the school’s chants. With a sports pass, students get access to every game.
BU on Broadway (TBD)
This student musical theater group puts on multiple shows a semester. Auditions for BU on Broadway are open to all undergraduate BU students, and all positions, including director, are filled by students. This fall, BU on Broadway will be performing “9 to 5” and “Into the Woods.”
Lobster Night (September 12)
This annual tradition takes place across campus in the three major dining halls on campus. It not only comes with lobster, but it includes corn on the cob, butternut squash bisque, Vermont maple apple-cranberry cobbler and more.
Welcome First Day of Classes Party (September 3)
Located in the lobby of the George Sherman Union, the Student Activities Office hosts various events. Students have a chance to win free T-shirts, pick up coupons for free food, and win prizes on the prize wheel. There is also the opportunity to learn more about the dining hall services at BU while trying a few sample products.
BU Farmers Market (September through October)
Local vendors come to the GSU Plaza every Thursday from September to October. Students can stop by to see what the local vendors are selling on their way to class.
Pumpkin Pie Day and Pumpkin Painting (October 28)
Join BU’s dining halls across the entire campus for some festive pumpkin painting. In addition, the dining halls provide a few sweet desserts — including pumpkin pie. The decorated pumpkins will be on display through Halloween.
