Freshmen and returning students alike won’t have to go far to find ways to entertain themselves this fall.
The Student Activities Office, Programming Council and Student Union all have scheduled on-campus events to welcome students to the new school year at Boston University.
PC president Sharon Hsu, a School of Management senior, said she believes that the fall events offer students fun alternatives to leaving campus and allow them to come together with friends.
The Daily Free Press has compiled this list of free upcoming events to keep you well-fed and entertained throughout the next few weeks.
Young The Giant
BU Central will play host to the up-and-coming musical act Young The Giant Sept. 8 at 8:30 p.m. The indie rock band, which is currently on tour with Incubus, performed recently at MTV’s Video Music Awards in August.
“This is putting BU on the map as a community where people congregate to appreciate art in our tiny little basement,” said Hayley Sherwood, a sophomore in the College of Fine Arts.
2nd Annual sustainability@BU Festival
“Get Your Green On!” is the calling card of the second annual sustainability@BU Festival. Environmentally friendly vendors and clubs will flock to the George Sherman Union plaza on Sept. 15 from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Dining Services will cook and serve fall crisps, and live music will play throughout the afternoon. Students can also visit booths set up by Goodwill, the Environmental Student Organization and several other groups.
BU Farmers’ Market
The farmers’ market will open for business at the GSU plaza every Thursday starting Sept. 8 until Oct. 27 from noon to 5 p.m. Each week, the market will offer produce grown in the Boston area to support local, sustainable farmers and producers, according to the Dining Services website. Booths will be set up for live music from the Tumbleweed Company, Sargent Choice, BU Bikes and Renew Boston. The market brings a rural atmosphere to the urban hub that encompasses the campus, said Rachel Hart, a College of Arts and Sciences sophomore and a patron of the farmer’s market. “It is convenient and brings awareness of locally grown products to students.”
Lobster Night
Dining Services will hold their annual Lobster Night on Sept.15 at 5 p.m. The dining halls will also serve corn on the cob and steamed potatoes, according to the Dining Services website.
PC drive-in movie
The Programming Council is taking over the BU Beach to show “The Hangover: Part II” and “Bridesmaids” on Sept. 9 from 8 p.m. to midnight. The screening will take on the appearance of an old-fashioned, drive-in theater.
