Boston’s City Council voted 12-1 at a meeting March 12 to officially designate the city as a sanctuary for transgender individuals and the wider LGBTQ+ community.
“Yentl” is Barbra Streisand’s criminally underrated 1983 directorial film debut set in turn-of-the-20th-century Poland. After her father (or “Papa”) dies, Yentl, the titular character played by Babs, decides to disguise herself as a man to study Talmudic law at a Jewish school called a Yeshiva. At school, she meets the ambitious Avigdor, who is in love with Hadass, a local girl. During the film, the three enter a love triangle complicated by Yentl’s gender secret.
“Only Friends” is a queer Thai series that follows four college students and their messy relationships. In classic sex comedy fashion, everyone is interested in everyone else, everyone likes to get drunk on a Tuesday night and, even though they’re college students, they never seem to study for anything.
“Nerdy Prudes Must Die” is just as outspoken and hilarious as its name suggests. It’s the fifth installment of the Hatchetfield series from StarKid Productions. Like its predecessors, it’s a horror-comedy musical set in the fictional town of Hatchetfield, except this time it’s a parody of 90s’ teen-slashers, complete with the high school stereotypes and questionable horniness.
I did not pick up “This Is How You Lose the Time War” by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone because of the beautiful cover art, the intriguing summary or even the review comment from Madeline Miller herself. Rather, I picked it up because of a tweet I saw four months ago
What intrigued me about “The Magnus Archives” was not the supernatural tales themselves — although those were so wonderfully written that even an anti-horror enthusiast like myself could enjoy them — but rather, the wonderful cast of intriguing characters that you meet.
Media has often shown society that the way to show that you’re a queer woman (whether that be lesbian, bisexual, pansexual or any other label), is to dress more masculine, carry yourself a certain way or overtly wear rainbow colors. Because of this, people often have a narrow perspective of how we look and dress.
“Koisenu Futari” answers the question posed in its first episode — “There’s nobody who can’t fall in love, right?” — by showing the audience how rich and fulfilling a life with a platonic partner can be. It reminds us that living life being true to yourself is always worth more than living it for someone else.
