With Mayor Marty Walsh soon to leave office and serve as Labor Secretary under the Biden administration, our city’s leadership must begin to address the difficulties we are left with. We must continue to hold our elected officials to their promises and push Boston to become a city that doesn’t thrive off of inequalities but rather fosters communities of growth and equality.
Considering the number of people this program has the potential to help, the Fresh Start ushers us into the new year on a hopeful note. While it remains to be seen whether The Boston Globe will follow through with reforming its system for criminal reporting, it has set a necessary precedent for reexamining established journalistic practices.
It’s important the crowd of mangy white supremacists who broke into the Capitol a few weeks ago are labeled as terrorists. But do the same for the cops letting them into the building and posing for selfies, the cops participating in the insurrection and the cops who engage in acts of terrrorism on the daily.
Walsh recognized health care workers, essential workers and the more than 1,000 Bostonians who died of COVID-19. After the unprecedented difficulties of 2020, Walsh said 2021 will be “a year for healing.”
The LGBTQ+ advocacy group holds a weekly "Action Hour," where members call representatives to demand justice for victims of police brutality and race-based violence.
The racial biases that were in the system then are still there now. And collecting data on traffic stops might not be of too much assistance — more action will need to be taken.
The University should be using its resources and platform to practice anti-racist work and learn about, rather than shy away from, the challenges faced by Black, Indigenous and people of color.
