COVID-19 exacerbates Massachusetts DOC health care shortcomings

Michael Horrell, a staff attorney at Prisoners’ Legal Services of Massachusetts — an organization focused on protecting civil rights of people in prisons — said the pandemic has worsened the quality of health care in the state’s correctional facilities, which has “never been great.”

Mass. Department of Corrections violates constitutional rights, DOJ finds

Through an exhaustive investigation of the Massachusetts DOC, the DOJ found that prisoners on mental health watch were left under-supervised, resulting in them hurting or killing themselves, according to a DOJ press release.

New bill could prevent jail time for relapse in Massachusetts

A bill before the Massachusetts Legislature could prevent people with substance use disorder from being sent to jail only for relapsing. If the bill is enacted, people diagnosed with substance use disorder who are on probation or are pretrial would be diverted to treatment and prohibited from being drug-tested.
