Marchant Glacier renamed in light of professor’s sexual harassment

Marchant Glacier in Antarctica, originally named for Boston University Earth and environment professor David Marchant, has been renamed in wake of findings that Marchant sexually harassed students.

Sexual assault reported near West Campus

A sexual assault took place near Commonwealth Avenue and Linden Street between 2:45 a.m. and 3:15 a.m. Friday morning, according to a community-wide alert from the Boston Police Department. Two men forced a woman into an alleyway near Reedsdale and Linden Streets, assaulted her and fled on foot in an undetermined direction.

City approves Yawkey Way name change due to supposed connections to racism

The Boston Public Improvement Commission unanimously voted Thursday morning to return Yawkey Way to its original name, Jersey Street, due a city-wide discussion over former Boston Red Sox owner Tom Yawkey’s supposed racist history.

Boston Strong Disaster Relief, a non-profit charity, is taking orders for “Boston Strong” license plates, which are unauthorized by the state, to allegedly provide support for survivors of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing.

Palestine supporters gather to fight for right to education

Members of Boston’s Palestine Solidarity Network held a rally Saturday on the Boston Common to petition for Palestinian students’ right to education. Affiliated groups from local universities collaborated to hold the rally in preparation for the release of a letter signed by over 40 organizations to show solidarity with Palestine.

City partners with app to help individuals on Marathon Monday

This year, all Individuals who are blind or visually impaired can navigate Boston during Marathon Monday via the Aira app — for free. Boston Mayor Martin Walsh announced Friday that there will be free access to the smartphone app Aira during One Boston Day (before the marathon) and the Boston Marathon itself.

Small, private New England colleges saw drop in enrollment over past 20 years

A review of enrollment statistics over the past 20 years found that 20 percent of the 118 four-year, private colleges in New England have seen their enrollment drop by at least 10 percent, The Boston Globe reported.

MBTA reaches multi-year agreement for implementation of AFC 2.0

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority has reached a multi-year agreement on their Automated Fare Collection system. The new cashless system is designed to increase speed along the green line through convenient payment options, all-door boarding, tap-on payment for all vehicles and increased accessibility.

MBTA’s derailment and safety efforts ‘not sufficient,’ report finds

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority was found to be “not sufficient” in their efforts to guarantee safe operations on the Green Line, such as avoiding derailments, in a report by Protran Technology, a technology provider.
