After sealing her first major endorsement since April, Democratic candidate Elizabeth Warren received Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick’s endorsement Wednesday during a meeting with supporters in Somerville, according to a press release.
Patrick told supporters in an email that Warren knows the American dream is worth the fight, according to the press release.
“She understands that government has a role to play, not in solving every problem in every person’s life, but in helping people help themselves,” he said. “We need her thoughtful, pragmatic, compassionate and reasoned voice in the Senate now to restore that dream and help put it back in reach of all Americans.”
Warren said Patrick has led the Commonwealth “with a strong belief in the importance of social justice, generational responsibility and the politics of conviction, not convenience,” according to the press release.
“I am deeply honored to receive his endorsement,” she said, “and I look forward to working with Gov. Patrick to create a level playing-field for working families and to give all people across the Commonwealth a fair shot at success.”
Warren had raised $6.9 million this year within the first three months of the year, while Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown’s campaign had raised $3.4 million, according to news sources.
After both candidates released their tax records earlier this year, Warren and Brown both place among the top earners in the nation.
Patrick’s announcement is the latest in a string of major endorsements for Warren, which have come from the Planned Parenthood Action Fund in April, The Human Rights campaign in March and the United Auto Workers union in February.
Earlier in May, Maine Sen. Susan Collins endorsed Brown. Brown received endorsements from former Boston Mayor Raymond Flynn and Worcester Mayor Konstantine Lukes.
Eric Fehrnstrom, a political advisor for the Brown campaign, later tweeted about the endorsement.
“After saying he’d stay out of primary, Deval Patrick today endorsed Eliz Warren for Senate,” Fehrnstrom tweeted. “Must be panic time at Warren HQ.”
