A new program was announced by sustainability@BU on Monday that will offer grants to Boston University students who present a project to tackle sustainability challenges at BU.
The program, called the Sustainability Innovation Seed Grant Program, was launched in collaboration with Innovate@BU. Students can apply for up to $500 to help kick-start their project.
Alyssa Helmling, a former sustainability ambassador for sustainability@BU, said this program is a great opportunity for students to make their idea a reality.
“If a student has an idea or a project that they feel will help make the BU a more sustainable campus, this seed grant program essentially gives them the money and tools to kickstart that project,” Helmling said. “Sustainability is teaming up with Innovation@BU to create this program, and it gives a lot of students a really great opportunity to boost their ideas forward that pertain to sustainability.”
Submitted projects must meet at least one of the recommendations in BU’s Climate Action Plan, according to the program’s website. Projects that have an impact beyond the university’s campus will be given preference over those who only involve BU.
Applications for the grants are open now and will close on Oct. 1, according to the website. The grants will be given out in mid-October and there will be a project showcase in February.
Helmling said she thinks the Sustainability Innovation Seed Grant Program is a great idea.
“I think reaching out into the student body to be able to come up with new and innovative ways to solve these sustainability problems is really great,” Helmling said. “The more minds we have working together, the better, and a lot of our student body is super creative and innovative.”
