The Boston University men’s tennis team fell to Hofstra University, 4-3, in its home opener Friday at the Track and Tennis Center.’ ‘ ‘
Despite the loss, BU coach Rick Edelmann was pleased with his team’s effort in battling a talented Hofstra team (1-1-1).
‘They’re a solid team,’ Edelmann said. ‘We played sharply and aggressively in doubles. We battled in singles. The issue, I feel, is that the guys have to get the winning feeling on our side.’
The Terriers (0-1) won three of six singles matches, but dropped both doubles matches in the third set. The only match BU took in the third set was by senior Miron Nissim (6-1, 2-6, 6-1).
‘He controlled the flow of the match and he controlled the momentum,’ Edelmann said.’
Freshman Stefan Toubia dominated his singles match with a decisive 6-0, 6-0 win. Toubia appears to be a star in the making for the Terriers, and Edelmann said he believes the rookie will develop into one of the top players on the team with time and experience.
Hofstra’s third-set victories swung the momentum in its favor and were the difference in the evenly contested match. Junior Jeff Chudacoff lost his match, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3, and senior Tim Sichler lost 3-6, 6-2, 6-4.’
In doubles play, the Terriers lost both of their matches. The decisive match featured Nissim and Chudacoff, who lost in a nail-biting tie-breaker, 9-8 (7-3). They had several opportunities to close out the match, but could not capitalize.
‘We had some easy put-away points and missed some shots,’ Edelmann said.’ ‘ ‘ ‘
After a disappointing 5-15 record last season, the Terriers are still learning what it takes to win consistently. Edelmann said he remains upbeat about prospects this season because of the work ethic and talent he sees in his team.
BU has a solid corps of senior leaders in Nissim, Sichler and Charles Weinstein. They will also rely on the potential and skill of Toubia, who will be given every opportunity to contribute this season and could play a major role for the Terriers.
The team returns to action Friday at the Quinnipiac Invitational in Hamden, Conn.
