The system of predatory capitalism that we are pitted against is able to permeate our daily lives unlike any other oppressive system of the past. Going back home to an apartment that costs too much, after a work day that pays us too little, for almost no time for leisure is punishment guaranteed to dishearten even the most resilient of souls.
In a state that spent over $20 billion on highway expansions, the MBTA’s obsession with a two-dollar fare is a choice, not a necessity. If the MBTA were to be at risk of financial ruin because broke college students aren’t paying their dues, that would be a policy failure from Beacon Hill, not a moral failure from students barely getting by.
As inheritors of the Great Recession, pioneers of social media activism and proponents of the phrase “eat the rich,” Generation Z is well-versed on the evils of capitalism. But times are a’changing, and a generation that proudly proclaims to “not dream of labor,” has aged into entering the workforce.
