CDS prepares to send off first ever matriculant students, reflects on growth

Every college at Boston University celebrates its graduating class each May— but for members of Computing and Data Sciences, the class of 2026 is particularly special. The weekend of May 14, CDS will celebrate the graduation of its first-ever undergraduate class. The cohort first entered the program in 2022, and have helped develop CDS in its formative years since its founding in 2019.

Boston University’s Cyber Alliance Seminar Series held its first event of the spring semester at the BU School of Law Feb. 11, with McDonald presenting on the ethical challenges of using nude images for artificial intelligence and machine learning research.

Internet moderation models trained on nude images sparks conversation about ethical research

The internet is not a safe place. Harmful subject matter such as nonconsensual records of nudity and, in extreme cases, child sexual abuse material, gets shared across the internet — and even ends up on the AI models trained to flag it.  These models need to be trained on existing sensitive images to recognize new sensitive images, requiring researchers to sift through sensitive material, Boston University assistant professor of Computing and Data Sciences Allison McDonald said. How to handle these data sets and present their findings ethically is an active debate.
