Originality is tempting, but authenticity is inviting. Originality comes from a desire to be the first, to be the best or to be the most creative. But authenticity comes from the honest expression of everything you stand for and who you truly are.
In its best moments, watching the show is like talking with a stranger who’s surprisingly honest and forthcoming. The show’s refreshing projected skepticism and detachment from imposing convictions of honesty on its audiences are its best attributes and serve for a trust that is a rarity in today’s media.
For all of us who hold a camera with trembling hands and a story in our hearts, the rising prominence of indie films and the support of groundbreaking production companies underscore that making a difference, one heartfelt story at a time, is not just possible but essential.
I have two separate Instagram accounts: one where I pretend to be effortlessly cool, fun, artsy and have my life together, and one where I’m supposed to be unfiltered, unbothered and free. And yet, here I am — filtering and bothering.
Recently, I had a friend tell me she was interested in listening to Phoebe Bridgers. If you haven’t been living under a rock, chances are that you’ve at least heard of her before. However, if you’ve never gotten around to listening, that’s okay, because I’m here to help.
We instead must find authenticity in our narratives, instead of scraping for diversity that never even existed. Maybe then — finally — we can believe equality is more than a political agenda.
Media has often shown society that the way to show that you’re a queer woman (whether that be lesbian, bisexual, pansexual or any other label), is to dress more masculine, carry yourself a certain way or overtly wear rainbow colors. Because of this, people often have a narrow perspective of how we look and dress.
The annual Alternative Service Breaks program through the Community Service Center at BU is continuing virtually over three weekends in place of their usual spring break trips around the nation — serving organizations remotely in the Greater Boston Area and beyond.
