The Office of the Provost at Boston University is undergoing structural changes, BU Provost and Chief Academic Officer Gloria Waters announced in an email sent to faculty and staff Thursday afternoon.

In the email, Waters outlined how several departments are being either changed or moved to other areas within the school administration.
“My vision is that this new structure will streamline our operations, foster greater collaboration across the University, and enhance our ability to support our faculty, staff, and students,” she wrote.
The office of Community & Inclusion will move under the Office of the President, according to the email.
“Connecting this work more concretely to the strategic priorities in the Office of the President will allow us to best support our students, faculty, and staff moving forward,” Waters wrote.
As part of this transition, Victoria Sahani, associate provost for Community & Inclusion, will step down from her position and return to the School of Law faculty, effective July 1.
“I am grateful for the work of Victoria and her team and look forward to recognizing her many contributions later this summer,” Waters wrote.
The office of Academic Initiatives & Operational Excellence, led by Associate Provost Sarah Hokanson, will take on a leading role in advancing the University’s commitment to operational and educational excellence, according to the email.
It will now oversee the office of Academic Program Review and Strategic Communications within the Office of the Provost and provide leadership to several University-wide services, including the University Libraries, the Center for Career Development, Student Wellbeing and the Newbury Center.
Additionally, Graduate Enrollment, led by Associate Vice President David Cotter, has been consolidated into Graduate Affairs, headed by Associate Provost Sean Mullen.
The move aims to ensure that graduate enrollment goals are fully integrated with the broader graduate strategy, Waters wrote.
The former Professional Development & Postdoctoral Affairs unit has also been integrated into Graduate Affairs, with the goal of continuing to provide support to all graduate and professional students, along with all postdoctoral scholars.
Finally, Enrollment & Student Administration, currently led by ad interim Vice President Christopher Sedore, will be integrated into the Office of the President. According to the email, the reason for the move is that the office is doing critical work that “aligns closely with presidential priorities.”
The changes reflect BU’s commitment to continuous improvement, Waters wrote, and they will further the University’s goal of aligning the Office of the Provost more closely with BU’s “evolving needs and strategic priorities.”
“I hope this broader visibility into our structure helps clarify how we are working to advance our shared mission,” she wrote. “I look forward to continued collaboration as we move ahead.”
