Boston University Student Government Judicial Commission issued a letter via email Friday to senators that validated the decision to impeach two members of SG Executive Board due to inadequate performance of their constitutionally mandated tasks. The letter includes details of the claims filed by a Senator Monday against the vice president of internal affairs and VP of finance.
The Senator, anonymous in the letter, submitted three official claims against Marwa Sayed, VP of internal affairs, and Kimberly Barzola, VP of finance.
The first claim stated that Barzola, a junior in the College of Arts and Sciences, has failed to give sufficient financial reports at Senate meetings. Instead, the claim noted, Barzola had only given one financial report during the fourth Senate Meeting and delegated “the majority of her constitutionally mandated task.”
Based on the first claim, Judicial Commission found that “in [Barzola’s] sole Financial Report (Senate Meeting #4), the report outlined the Balance and Withdrawals, not any specifics,” according to the letter.
The second claim stated Sayed, also a junior in CAS, has also failed to “maintain meeting logs and other related records of Student Government” that are readily available to the BU Community, the letter noted. In the letter, Judicial Commission found Sayed only filed meeting notes from Senate Meeting #1 out of five Senate meetings held.
The third claim, based on Article 1, Section 4 of the SG By-laws, asserted Barzola to have discriminated against “the only Jewish cabinet member by creating a hostile work environment,” according to the letter. The third claim alleged E-board to have held an “overt bias against Jewish Senators,” the letter stated.
However, in the letter, Judicial Commission found inconclusive evidence of direct discrimination, negating the claim that Barzola’s beliefs influenced E-board’s decision to fire the referenced cabinet member.
The letter concluded that Judicial Commission has made a two-thirds majority decision that validated reasons for the impeachment of Barzola and Sayed, conforming to the SG Constitution. These valid reasons for impeachment will require a simple majority of at least 51 percent vote from Senate to proceed with impeachment trials, according to the SG Constitution.
Investigation by Judicial Commission to the proposed claims was launched Monday, The Daily Free Press reported.
