Everyone knows that a new season comes with new — and even some old— aesthetics and trends. As fall rolls around, and we begin to pull out our thicker knits and jackets, it’s about time we add some additions to our fall lookbooks.
From lace skirts to suede jackets, this fall is all about enhancing your self-expression through styling simpler pieces while accessorizing with bold pieces. This fall, we’re also playing with more neutral colors, including heather grays and mocha browns, as well as more delicate materials and textures.
Lately, whenever I’m scrolling through TikTok or Pinterest, I’ve been noticing the rise of a “disciplined” and “focused” aesthetic, which emphasizes the idea of being ambitious and driven to achieve one’s career or academic goals.
The vision boards pertaining to this aesthetic include brown suede jackets, gray knits, ballet flats and leather bags, while incorporating pictures of notebooks and libraries, which immediately aligned with the overall flair of fall fashion.
The “disciplined” aesthetic is one that I feel should resonate across the BU community. It’s imperative that we maintain a sense of determination for academic and career-oriented goals, and remain fashionable while doing so. Bearing that in mind, I’ve compiled a list of trend predictions to keep you prepared for what’s in store this fall. Hopefully, from this list, you’ll find a few pieces you’d like to add to your wardrobe just in time for the upcoming season.
Suede Fringe Jackets
Ever since the Chloé Fall 2024 show, the boho-chic style is predicted to be returning this season. Chemena Kamali, the creative director of Chloé, released a collection featuring sheer tulle blouses and dresses, as well as glossy leather capelets. However, there was one design element that stuck out to me: fringe.
Although we haven’t seen fringe in street style lately, it has the potential to hold a fashionable spot this fall. However, instead of wearing the festival-style fringe jackets, this fall is about styling them in a more rustic and relaxed-fitted fashion.
Fringe jackets can be styled with neutral-colored sweaters or long sleeve shirts underneath, with baggy jeans or loose trousers and accompanied by leather shoulder bags. Brands like Free People, Anthropologie and Reformation offer different styles and varieties of the fringe jacket, but these jackets can also be widely found at thrift and vintage stores.
Capri Pants
This past summer, while strolling through New York City, I saw several people walking past me wearing the iconic capri pant and kitten heel combination.
Despite their prevalence in the summer, capri pants haven’t been completely retired just yet. This fall, I anticipate seeing people styling their capri pants in a more autumnal fashion.
Although capri pants do strike some controversy, especially regarding its popularity in the earlier 2000s, their resurgence back into the fashion realm has certainly been revamped from the past.
Capri pants can be paired with tighter long or short sleeve shirts in neutral, monochromatic shades. In addition, these pants can be styled with oversized sweaters or button-down shirts, along with knee-high leather boots or ballet flats. Brands like Revolve, Reformation and Abercrombie & Fitch offer capri pants in different colors, lengths and fits.
Lace Midi Skirts
Although lace skirts were also popular throughout this past summer, they can also be worn throughout the early fall days, right before the Boston weather gets too chilly.
There are several different ways to style a lace skirt, but in accordance with autumnal weather conditions, the skirt can be paired with thicker sweaters and jackets. My ideal outfit when styling a lace skirt would be with a neutral-colored knit sweater — preferably gray or cream — paired with some light-pink ballet flats. These lace skirts can be found at Lioness, Revolve and Zara, in different lengths and styles.
Cashmere Knits
Referring to the “discipline” style I mentioned earlier, cashmere knits perfectly align with the style of this aesthetic. Almost all the vision boards I’ve seen regarding the “discipline” aesthetic had pictures of knits in neutral tones, like gray, cream and brown, which are certainly in season for this fall.
Cashmere knits also display a more minimalist and muted look, ultimately embracing a quiet luxury style to them. Thus, to those of you who have been looking to achieve a more muted style, wearing more relaxed knits this fall acts as a great first step.
What I admire most about these knits are their versatility — these sweaters and cardigans can be paired with any type of bottoms, from trousers to midi jean skirts. Some good brands to shop for cashmere knits include Everlane, Sézane and Reformation.
This fall is about elevated basics and neutral colors. By styling some of the pieces on my list, hopefully you can arrange some trendy yet cozy looks. However, these are just some of the many fall trends, so feel free to experiment with different styles and pieces to see which looks you love most.
