Fallen Worcester firefighter transported to Boston medical examiner

Heavy police and fire presence on Massachusetts Turnpike and overpasses on BU campus is due to the transport of the body of a Worcester firefighter who died this morning, a BUPD official said.

Worcester Fire Lieutenant Jason Menard, 39, died while fighting a blaze in a three-story home in Worcester early this morning, The Worcester Fire Department said in a statement. Menard and three other firefighters were transported to a local hospital where one is in serious but stable condition and two were treated for non-life threatening injuries and released.

An adult female occupant of the home was also transported with serious injuries and no other civilian injuries have been reported, according to the statement.

Menard had served on the Worcester Fire Department since 2010, according to the statement. He leaves behind his wife and three children.

“This is a tragic day for the Worcester Fire Department and the City of Worcester,” Worcester Mayor Joseph Petty said in the statement. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to Lieutenant Menard’s family.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation, according to the statement.
