The Boston University golf team finished third out of 10 teams in the Sacred Heart Fall Classic this weekend at the Great River Golf Club in Milford, Conn.’ ‘
BU coach Tom Varnum was pleased with his squad’s performance.
‘Our effort this weekend was fantastic,’ Varnum said. ‘I’m very happy with the way we finished the [fall] season.’
BU was led by junior Kaitlyn Mardeusz, who shot 83 on Sunday and 80 on Monday to finish eighth among individual scorers for the tournament.
Senior Allison Hamilton also had a strong showing, recording scores of 83 and 94 for the weekend.’
Mardeusz and Hamilton’s efforts were particularly impressive considering that both were playing their first match of the fall. Mardeusz missed the entire fall season with a stress fracture in her foot, while Hamilton had been battling a muscle strain.’
BU’s other top scorers were sophomore Ana Johnson and senior Lauren Stong. Johnson, who fired an 86 on Sunday, closed out strong Monday with a 79 ‘-‘- good for 10th in individual scoring. Stong shot an 83 and 86 for a 16th-place finish.’ ‘ Sophomore Dana DeStefano finished 34th after rebounding from a first-round score of 97 with an 88 on Monday.’ ‘
The final fall match left Varnum with a glimpse of his team’s potential this spring.
‘We’ve had a tough fall,’ Varnum said. ‘We were not able to field our strongest team all season.”
The Terriers finished 29 strokes back of first-place finisher and tournament host Sacred Heart University and 13 strokes behind Brown University.’
The tournament also included Central Connecticut State University, the College of the Holy Cross, Dartmouth College, St. Francis College and the University of Hartford.
BU had three players place in the top 20 of an individual field that included more than 50 golfers. The Terriers were eight strokes below the individual average of 90.
Varnum said he was encouraged by how well his team performed at Great River Golf Club, which he described as ‘a very difficult course.”
Following their first top-three finish of the season, the Terriers will look to continue the upward trend when their schedule resumes in the spring.
