Over 300 people congregated in the cramped, dimly lit Paradise Rock Club on Saturday Feb. 3 to welcome and listen to the eclectic tunes of 20-year-old Paolo Nutini.
Gifted with a pleasantly scratchy, powerful voice, Nutini performed all the songs off his current album These Streets, including “Alloway Grove,” “Million Faces” and “Rewind.” The Scottish singer’s first hit single, “New Shoes,” received the loudest praise, to which Nutini responded by dancing onstage. “Last Request” prompted many fans to sing along with Nutini, who stopped singing briefly to hand over the spotlight.
The singer playfully made efforts between performances to become friendly with his audience, referring to the Boston Celtics basketball team as “the Boston hoops” and commenting on his Scottish accent, adding, “Sorry if you can’t understand me.” Swinging his body and tapping his shoes, Nutini continued with “Jenny Don’t Be Hasty” and “Autumn.”
The concert provided a wide-range mix from a soulful, melodic ballad to an energized, almost angry rock song. Nutini ended the night with his own rendition of Gnarls Barkley’s hit “Crazy,” which certainly described the reaction he received from his listeners. Fans continued to cheer and sing along to Nutini’s until the concert ended around 11 p.m., proving they understood every word and the European import had nothing to be sorry about.
