Boston University Professor Irina Kristy is expected to face charges for abetting her son in running a drug lab in their apartment, according to an article published Monday by the Somerville Journal.
Kristy, a professor of math and statistics at BU, and her son Grigory Genkin are suspected of cooking methamphetamine from their apartment in Somerville, the article said.
According to a Somerville Police Department report posted on the SPD website on Monday, Genkin, 29, was arraigned in Somerville District Court on Monday for distribution of methamphetamine, conspiracy to violate drug law and drug violation near a school zone.
The Journal reported that Detective Michael Brown named Kristy as an accomplice in his report, calling her “complicit” in the operation. The Journal also cited a police report that said that a criminal complaint will be made against Kristy.
BU does not have additional information, spokesman Colin Riley said.
Math and Statistics Department Chair Tasso Kapper declined to comment on the situation regarding Kristy.
Irina Kristy could not be reached in time for a comment.
Urbashee Paul, a sophomore in the College of Arts and Sciences who also took her Linear Algebra class, said that she is shocked because it seems “absurd” that a woman her age would condone her son’s actions.
Regardless of whether Kristy is guilty, she said, she hopes the professor returns to BU next semester.
“It could have been possible that Professor Kristy had no knowledge of the fact that there was a meth lab in her house. Her son could have convinced her that it was some crazy lab experiment, but chances are she knew full well,” Paul said. “Although I do not support her involvement in the issue, I hope that it does not affect her chances to teach at BU.”

SHE IS THE WORST PROFESSOR AT BU SHE SHOULDN’T COME BACK
THIS MAN SPEAKS THE TRUTH
This is 100% correct.
I knew that BU should be paying its faculty members more!
Breaking BU
This lady can’t speak english, falls asleep DURING OUR FINAL, and doesn’t know what’s going on half the time. Im not surprised- she’s literally dumb.
This is absurd. This shouldn’t affect her teaching at BU. This article seems very biased, stating the result but not the story. We don’t know everything that happened or how and why it happened, we can’t make any judgments. This is what should be taught, if BU denies her her teaching position I would be ashamed of this action.
Thank you for a reasonable and balanced reaction. I, too, feel that there still is presumption of innocence – or should be. If she is fired, I will be looking for support to overturn the decision. Let me know if you are willing to lend your voice.
this is not an accusation of inappropriate relations with a student, or handing out answers to a test, fraud, or making out of hand comments to the press… it’s METH, a highly addicting, illegal drug that KILLS POEPLE! simple facts: someone was cooking meth on a property she owned, end of story, she is guilty of negligence at the very least.
This is about a mEthlab, not a mathlab. She hosted the production of one of the most dangerous narcotics, not one of the most boring subjects.
Teachers are supposed to be role models of more than what a good pair of glasses and a lot of free time can teach you. They are supposed to portray how a life of academia and scholarship can pay dividends for both your career and character. Not how it can teach you to get high. (Though I’d bet 99% of anthro and philosophy professors are quite adept at doing so har har)
Wait a minute Anonymous says,On 11-17-11 @10:58 a.m. you said she is the worst professor & @9:09p.m. the same day, you are taking up for her, wtf are you two faced or do you get drunk in the morning, forget what you say and then suck up at night? thats what it sounds like, loser,,,
LOL Anonymous is not one person, it can be any number of people not revealing their name…
I don’t see how the story is biased as Anonymous (the one not writing in all caps)suggests. It’s probably all the information that was available- in investigations, the police aren’t big on handing out information, and the investigation is ongoing. The article doesn’t even suggest that she shouldn’t be allowed to return to her post- the only mention is one student noting that they feel it shouldn’t affect her ability to teach.
I disagree. At the very least, I think she should be suspended from her position until the case is tried. It’s ridiculous for any university to allow any Professor on campus who is under investigation for this kind of activity. It’s quite possible that she is innocent, but in the meantime, it can’t hurt to be cautious. It’s more responsible for her to be innocent and be on suspension unfairly than for her to be guilty and be allowed to interact with students.
I had professor Kristy and she was a great lady and a good teacher.
I agree. She was very sweet and really wanted to help her students understand the class’ material. A terrific professor; I hope she does not get fired for this.
Meth ’em up, meth ’em up….BC SUCKS!
I know both Ms Kristy and her son. I know she used to let her son get all tweaked out and grade students papers since she was tired and just didn’t want to deal with it. I also know she didn’t care that he was making meth since he gave her part of the profits from his business. She would let greshia do all of her work at home so she could relax and do other things.
I took professor kristy a couple years back and had huge difficulties understanding her english (and her class in general). As a student who had A’s in accounting (managerial and financial) and also Finance, I found it a bit strange that I could only manage a B in her class since I took it in high school as well…. After hours sessions were not met in a timely fashion and she was rude when I attempted to look for assistance in my notes after not following her well in class. Regardless of the outcome of the investigation, she should not be able to return back to BU… I think they need to do a full review of all the professors to make sure none are slopping through the cracks (no pun intended)- 52k is a lot of money for a meth-head to teach stats…
This lady is like a real life Heisenberg!!
