The NHL is back, but the 2025-2026 season looks very different than its past 11 years. For the first time since the 2014 Winter Olympics, NHL players will be allowed to represent their country at the quadrennial sporting spectacle.

It’s the first day of the 2025-26 NHL Season. Hockey fans can rejoice once more: surviving another offseason full of trade rumors, not-so-permanent retirements — ahem, Marc-Andre Fleury — and the first — and hopefully, last — decentralized draft.

The Vancouver Canucks have been plagued with issues throughout the entire season. On paper, they’re not a worse team than that which forced Game 7 in the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs against Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers.
Utah Hockey Club is finally getting a name. Smith Entertainment Group, owners of the Utah Jazz, acquired majority ownership rights to the NHL team back in April 2024. The news came after a few months of speculation that Ryan Smith, SEG chairman, wanted a team in Utah, and that team would be the now-defunct Arizona Coyotes.
The NHL’s nation-based tournament is not the Olympics, and it isn’t really an all-star game either. Instead of the typical all-star format used by nearly every other professional sports league, the NHL opted to create the 4 Nations Face-Off, featuring teams of players from Canada, the United States, Finland and Sweden.
