The Boston University women’s soccer team finished off its three-game homestand with a convincing 3-0 win over Binghamton University on Sunday. The Terriers dominated in every facet of the game, giving the Bearcats no chance to get back into the game after an early tally by senior Taleen Dimirdjian.
Dimirdjian, who hadn’t recorded a goal in her collegiate career before Sunday, scored twice to help the Terriers (5-4-2, 1-0-0 America East) defeat the Bearcats (3-4-1, 0-1-0 AE). Dimirdjian opened the score in the fourth minute on a corner kick from sophomore Jessica Luscinski. Luscinski threw the ball into the box, where Dimirdjian found it after a flurry in front of the net and sent it past Binghamton goalkeeper Jen McEachron.
‘I was really excited to score and it was nice that it came in our first conference game,’ Dimirdjian said. ‘I’ve really been working hard and digging deep and it was nice to score after the goal was disallowed last game.’
The Terriers kept putting the pressure on the Bearcats, forcing the play and keeping Binghamton on their heels. After several quality chances by BU, it was junior Corie Halasz finding the back of the net in the 16th minute. Halasz found a loose ball at the top of the 18-yard box and sent a bullet into the top left half of the net past McEachron. After outshooting Binghamton 8-1 in the first half, BU wasn’t finished.
It was Dimirdjian again, putting home her second goal of the game to put the Terriers on top, 3-0. A ball that was sent in to the box on what looked to be an innocent play turned disastrous for the Bearcats as it rebounded off a defender and right to Dimirdjian who put the ball home.
‘She’s great in the air,’ BU coach Nancy Feldman said of Dimirdjian. ‘We’ve also had a lot more confidence in our corners than we have in the past. Luscinski has made consistent crosses on her corners and we have a lot of good players in the air. We made an adjustment before the Harvard game and it seems to be working out pretty well.’
The Terriers bested the Bearcats in almost every offensive category, which helped contribute to the large win. BU outshot Binghamton 16-4 and dominated in corner kicks, 10-2. Senior Emily Pallotta and Dimirdjian led the Terriers with three shots apiece.
Senior Janie Reilly played well again in goal for the Terriers, although she went relatively untested for most of the match. Her two saves kept Binghamton off the board and ultimately gave her the fourth clean sheet of her season. Reilly had a bit of a scare when she collided with a Binghamton player near the end of the first half, but the senior remained in goal for the rest of the game.
However, BU has made a habit of beating Binghamton, winning by multiple goals in each of their last three meetings. The Terriers have now won their last 10 games in conference, dating back to the 2007 season.
BU looks to continue their success this decade in America East, where they have won six out of the last nine America East Championships.
‘Coach sets up a good out of conference schedule with a lot of difficult games,’ Dimirdjian said. ‘That puts our game at a higher level which helps us play better in conference.’
‘ ‘We have some of the best players in the conference and it helps playing that tough schedule at the beginning of the season,’ Feldman said.
