Flour Power

Walk into Clear Flour Bakery, and you’re immediately confronted with the scent of fresh baked bread and pastries, all of which line the shelves behind the counter.

Clear Flour, a bakery that prides itself on using unbleached flour, is located at 178 Thorndike St. To get there, follow Commonwealth Ave. past West Campus and Brighton Street and Thorndike will be on the left.

On entering the endearingly small bakery, I instantly noticed the fresh desserts on the left side of the shelves. Deborah Avery, a Clear Flour employee and Boston University alumnus, warmly greeted me and gave me her recommendations for desserts.

“The chocolate croissants are our most popular. We also have plain, gruyere cheese and apricot [croissants],” she said.

I had also read on Clear Flour’s website that their morning buns had been voted Best of Boston. On asking Avery about them, she replied, “Those are also really popular.

You can get them with or without walnuts. They’re like a cinnamon roll made with a croissant.”

Shannon Supitkowsky, BU Office of Residence Life Secretary and Clear Flour customer, is also a fan of the morning buns, saying, “They’re so light and fluffy. I wish I could wrap myself in one and eat my way out.”

Though the fresh baked desserts are amazing, the breads are not to be ignored. When I asked Avery about the best breads, she told me their French bread was definitely the most popular.

“Customers love the French bread and the baguettes. The German rye is also good for someone looking for a darker bread, and for something different our Focaccias are great,” Avery said.

I ended up trying the sourdough bread, great for sandwiches, and the New England Night, a mixture of whole wheat and rye bread baked with pecans and cranberries.

As for desserts, I had the chocolate croissant, so fluffy with bits of chocolate inside; a sample of an Apfelstreusel, like a bite sized piece of apple pie; and the morning bun without walnuts, the perfect way to start my day.

After much deliberation, I eventually bought a roll of sourdough, a roll of New England Night, a chocolate croissant and a morning bun.

Unfortunately, I ate everything by that evening.

The prices are beyond reasonable, however, so I will definitely be going back. My purchase totaled just under eight dollars.

Clear Flour doesn’t bake the same items everyday though, so if you’re looking for something specific, be sure to check their website, clearflourbread.com, in advance to see what is offered each day.

What they do offer is guaranteed to be fresh.

Assistant Manager Rori Greene, said, “We have a 24-hour cycle going with bakers here overnight to make sure everything is fresh the next day.”
