Sophomore forward Jenelle Kohanchuk leads the No. 8 Boston University women’s hockey team in goals (8), shots (55) and points (9), through nine games. She’s had a hand in 36 percent of BU’s (3-2-4, 1-1-0 Hockey East) goals this season.
The Winnipeg, Manitoba native was named GoTerriers.com Student-Athlete of the Week and Hockey East Pure Hockey Player of the Week for the week of Oct. 19, after scoring all four of BU’s goals in a 4-2 victory over Wayne State University.
‘She’s obviously avoided the sophomore slump, getting out of the gate with a fantastic start,’ BU coach Brian Durocher said on his star forward. ‘Her overall game has meant a lot to the team with her timely big goals. She’s had a super start for us and has been a huge contributor to the offensive output.’
Road Warriors
In five road games, BU has posted a record of 2-1-2. Excluding its 7-2 loss to No. 2 Clarkson University, BU has outscored its opponents 15-9 and outshot them 114-100. On Nov. 15, the Terriers will embark on an arduous six game road trip, in which they will face Providence College, Boston College, the University of Maine, Princeton University and Connecticut, before returning to Walter Brown Arena on Dec. 5.
‘It’s nice that we came out of the gate with two wins and two ties [on the road],’ Durocher said. ‘We showed that we can play on the road and that we have the composure that it takes to win on the road. There will be challenges on the road, and we’ll have to be ready for them.’
Power Outage
The Terriers’ power play has not been a strong point this season. BU has converted only 7-of-39 power plays for a 17.9 percent clip. On Monday night against the Eagles, the Terriers had four power-play opportunities, but could not capitalize and turn those advantages into goals. But Durocher has seen improvements in the past few games and expects his team to get better in these situations.
‘We have been focusing on moving the puck around more during our power plays, and we started attacking the net with more passes,’ Durocher said. ‘We’re finding the seam and putting pressure on teams [when we’re] on the power play. And we weren’t doing that earlier [this season].’
