In its lead story Monday, The Daily Free Press once again repeated an error that has appeared in the paper several times since April 2000 (‘Collaboration changed policy,’ Dec. 9, pg. 1). In a question to Chancellor John Silber about how to bring about changes to the guest/visitor policy, the writer reported that Dr. Silber said, ‘Students can rot until hell freezes over and that policy is not going to be changed.’ He actually said, ‘Students can riot until hell freezes over…’ This is not a subtle difference. It speaks to the approaches and methods by which people can work to bring about change. Riots, demonstrations and marches are good for show, but contribute nothing to a meaningful exchange of views. The constructive approach of the current Student Union, in contrast, merited and received a thoughtful review, which in turn led to changes in the policy.
In last Wednesday’s lead story, your article looked at compensation, but overlooked something that’s harder to compare, because there are no readily available sources of information (‘Silber’s salary more than area presidents,” Dec. 4, pg. 1). I’m speaking of charitable support of one’s school. Most people acknowledge the great contributions Dr. Silber has made as president and chancellor, but few know of his personal donations. Over the past 31 years, John and Kathryn Silber have given gifts valued at nearly $2.5 million to Boston University. This is an important but little-known measure of dedication and commitment, one which should not go unrecognized.
