CITY CRIME LOGS

The following reports were taken from the Allston-Brighton District D-14 crime logs from Oct. 26 to Nov. 1, 2011.

Squatted and Swatted

At 10:20 a.m. last Wednesday, officers were approached by a female witness who said she believed a number of homeless people were squatting in the basement at 1254 Commonwealth Ave. in Allston. Police arrived at the building and observed that the unsecured basement had a “no trespassing” sign posted. Officers reported smelling stale urine and fecal matter emanating from the basement, and saw a shopping cart, dirty clothes and empty beer bottles. Two other rooms in the basement had locks that appeared to be tampered with. In the rooms, police found four people sleeping among what police described as filth. The four people, three in their 40s and one age 21, were placed under arrest for trespassing. Two have addresses where they normally reside, and the others were declared homeless.

De-bolted

Officers responded to a radio call regarding a breaking and entering at 159 Kelton St. in Brighton last Wednesday at 5 p.m. Upon arrivals, the victims, two females in their 20s, stated that an unknown person or persons entered their apartment between 11 a.m. and 4:40 p.m. that day. The suspect stole two Macintosh computers, $3,600 in jewelry and accessories and a digital camera. A witness who lives nearby reported that the deadbolt locks could be heard being opened around 12:30 p.m. The victims were advised to have management change the locks, and the location of the stolen items will be further investigated.

Hey, big spender

Last Friday a female reported from 200 Lake St. in Brighton that her Industrial Bank credit card was removed from her purse while it was unattended inside her dorm room. The victim said she suspects that someone entered sometime between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. the previous day. She said that her roommate left the room without locking the door. After contacting her credit card company, she found that a total of about $1,935 in charges were made from ALDO, H&M, the Apple Store and other locations. The incident will be further investigated by detectives.

Cracking up

At 12 a.m. last Friday, police received a walk-in report of a robbery that happened at the corner of Union Street and Monastery Road in Brighton. The 22-year-old victim said that he was walking home when an unknown male approached him and demanded his money and cellphone, and said, “Do you want to get shot?” The victim gave the suspect $3 and his phone, which the suspect threw on the ground, damaging the phone and cracking the screen. Directly after the incident, the victim walked to the police station. He said that the suspect was wearing a ski mask and all black clothing. Officers searched the area with unsuccessful results.

Winnie the Pooh?

Last Friday at 11:45 a.m., officers responded to a radio call regarding an armed robbery at Brooks Variety Street Market at 32 Brooks St. in Brighton. The shop owner, a 57-year-old male, reported that a man with his hand covered in his clothing, ordered him to give him all the money in the store. The victim handed the suspect over $400 and then proceeded to follow the suspect who fled to his vehicle on Olivia Road. The store owner followed the suspect while driving in his own vehicle but kept driving out of fear after the suspect pulled over. After tracing the license plate, police called the vehicle’s owner. The owner then contacted his daughter, and it was revealed that her 25-year-old boyfriend committed the crime. The girlfriend told the offender to go to the police station to turn in what he stole. A stolen bottle of honey and a jar of Welch grape jelly were also turned in as evidence.
