The Boston University women’s soccer team continued its hot streak on Wednesday evening, edging out Dartmouth College 1-0 for its eighth straight victory and 11th overall on the season.
The Terriers (11-5-0) went on the road to Hanover, N.H. to participate in their first out-of-conference match in more than three weeks. The victory ensured that BU would finish the season above .500 in non-conference action as the team overcame a 2-4 start to finish off 6-5-0.
Opportunities in the first half of play were few and far between. The teams traded three shots apiece with only
BU graduate student forward Lisa Kevorkian’s header in the 23rd minute registering as a shot-on-goal.
Dartmouth (3-7-1) thought it had grabbed a big lead early in
the first half as midfielder Allison Yeager put a shot in the net amid traffic in the penalty box. It was not to be, however, as the goal was called back by the officials for an offsides call.
The second half saw BU take a little more initiative, firing 12 shots at the Big Green net. The pressure finally paid off in the 61st minute as junior midfielder Jessica Luscinski made a strong individual effort to put her team in the lead.
Luscinski’s dribble down the left flank was capped off by a strike that Dartmouth goalie Colleen Hogan looked sure to handle. The soccer gods smiled upon the Terriers at that moment as the ball grazed off the goalkeeper’s gloves and then bounced off the post and into the net.
The goal would be all the Terriers would need as BU goalkeepers Kelly King and Alice Binns continued their stellar play in the net. Late pressure by Dartmouth gave the game a little bit of excitement, but it was all for naught as the Big Green couldn’t convert off a pair of corners near the final whistle.
At the end of the second half, BU held an overall shot advantage of 15-6. They committed only two fouls to Dartmouth’s five. The victory continues a four-game undefeated streak against Dartmouth, improving its overall record against its northern rivals to 5-6-4. BU will look to even the record next at year as the yearly rivalry continues.
For the Terriers, Luscinski’s goal gave the junior her eighth overall on the season. Her 19 points are second overall on the team to Kevorkian, who has 10 goals and four assists for 24 points.
Dartmouth’s only two shots on goal came in the second half. Strikes by midfielder Marina Moschitto and forward Aly O’Dea were safely parried away by Binns. The loss marked the fourth time in five games that the Big Green have ended up on the wrong side of the scoreboard.
BU will continue conference play on Sunday with an away game at Binghamton University. The Terriers will then return to Boston to finish off the regular season with a pair of home games against the University at Albany and the University of Maine.
