24 cupcakes? No problem!

By Staff Writer Katie Pontes

Boston University students entering the Student Activities Center gym on Saturday were greeted by a traditional carnival atmosphere, complete with music, games, prizes and 480 cupcakes.

Fifteen brave, and evidently hungry, students entered the cupcake-eating contest at Sigma Alpha Mu’s carnival. Contestants were given nothing but a glass of water and a tray of cupcakes. The objective? To finish all 24 cupcakes first.

College of Arts and Sciences junior Jacob Beck rose to the task, winning the contest and collecting a $24 Johnny Cupcakes gift card as a prize. As a member of the fraternity hosting the event, Beck said that he entered the contest on a whim.

“They needed more people, so I figured I’d do it,” he said. When asked of his strategy in eating so many cupcakes, Beck said. “I just kind of took the tray from top to bottom, putting three or four in my mouth at a time with some water.”

Prizes were also awarded to second place winner Maria Iuliano, a CAS junior, and third place winner Brendan Stack, a CAS sophomore.

Sammy held the carnival to raise money for an Alzheimer’s charity called the Judy Fund, and was a first for the fraternity, said Sigma Alpha Mu’s president Jake Magid, a CAS junior.

“We’ve done concerts for the past few years, so we wanted to try something new,” Magid said. “We wanted to collaborate with as many student groups as possible.”

CAKE, the Culinary Arts and Kitchen Entertainment group at BU, organized the cupcake-eating contest and was one of many non-Greek groups represented at the carnival.

CAKE President Lyndsay Maggin, a School of Management senior, said that it took CAKE 11 hours to bake all 480 cupcakes for the event. “We actually do a lot of eating competitions throughout the year,” Maggin said.
