The Boston University softball team traveled to Lewisburg, Pennsylvania to take on Bucknell University this weekend.
The Terriers (17-27, 7-11 Patriot League) ended their year by getting swept by the Bison (33-18, 12-6 Patriot League) by scores of 2-1, 6-1 and 5-3.
The weekend started with a Saturday doubleheader. Game one saw BU and Bucknell knotted at one going into the bottom of the seventh, after the Bison scored in the third inning off an RBI double and the Terriers crossed the plate in the fifth thanks to a Bucknell error. In the Bison’s first at-bat of the seventh frame, first baseman Erin Cox hit a walk-off home run off sophomore pitcher Makinna Akers for the win.
In game two, the Terriers scored first when sophomore catcher Gabi Martinez hit an RBI double, but that was the only run of the game for BU. Bucknell then went on to compile six runs on 10 hits against Akers and junior pitcher Melanie Russell. Akers allowed two runs, neither earned, while Russell gave up four earned runs. BU finished with eight hits, two of which came from freshman right fielder Emma Wong.
The final game of the series Sunday afternoon had Bucknell score four runs in the bottom of the first inning before BU got one back in the third. The Bison added another one in the bottom of the sixth, giving the Terriers a four-run deficit to surmount with three outs left. BU managed to put two runs on the board in the seventh with the help of freshman third baseman Jilee Schanda’s two-RBI single, but ultimately couldn’t complete the comeback, losing 5-3 to close out the series and the season.
Men’s lacrosse falls to No. 4 Duke 13-7 to close out season
The Boston University men’s lacrosse team finished its season with a tight 13-7 loss to No. 4 Duke University Sunday in North Carolina.
The Terriers (6-8, 3-5 Patriot League) ended their year on a six-game losing streak, capped off by the game against the Blue Devils (12-5).
Freshman attack Jack Wilson got the scoring started for BU on a goal assisted by sophomore attack Pat Myers about five and a half minutes into the game. Duke scored three straight goals to follow up Wilson’s strike, ending the quarter up by two.
BU got the first goal of the second quarter as well when Wilson connected with Myers to cut the lead to one. The Blue Devils added another goal, but the Terriers pushed back with two of their own from freshman attack Ryan Hilburn and sophomore midfielder Cal Dearth to tie the contest at four apiece. Another goal from each side made the score 5-5 going into halftime.
After the break, Duke came out firing, notching three more consecutive goals to take an 8-5 lead. The Terriers got one back a little over halfway through the third frame with Myers’ second, but the Blue Devils scored once to end the third and once to open the fourth, extending their advantage. BU scored once more with 12:19 to go in the game when Wilson tallied his fifth point on the day after finding freshman midfielder Greg Farris to pull within three.
The Terriers were unable to score again while Duke went on its last three-goal run of the day for the win.
While the shots were largely even, with Duke holding a five-shot advantage, and the Terriers only picking up one fewer ground ball than the Blue Devils (28-27), BU turned over the ball 17 times. Its opponent only did so 11. The Terriers also were 14-for-24 at the faceoff and successfully cleared 16 of their 18 attempts.
Sophomore goalkeeper Christian Carson-Banister made 14 saves in the loss.
Women’s lacrosse finishes year with 17-9 loss to No. 5 BC
The Boston University women’s lacrosse team headed down the road Saturday to take on No. 5 Boston College for the final game of the squad’s season.
The Terriers (8-10, 5-3 Patriot League) got on the board first when freshman attack Mickenzie Larivee found the back of the net 3:12 into the game, but the Eagles (15-3) proved to be too much for BU to handle, winning by a score of 17-9.
Larivee would end up tallying five goals on the day while junior midfielder Jill Horka, sophomore defender Charlotte Castronovo, junior attack Jenny Thompson and senior attack Lindsay Weiner each added a marker of their own as well.
The Terriers were outshot 33-20 and BC also had the advantage in draw controls, winning 16 to BU’s 12. The scarlet and white held their own in ground balls, tying the Eagles in pickups with 12 each, though they turned the ball over 13 times to BC’s 11.
Sophomore goalkeeper Caroline Meegan made six saves in the loss.
