March horror recap: “Immaculate,” “Stopmotion,” and more | You Scared Me!

By Josh Rosenthal April 5, 2024
After a desolate start to the year, I’m so glad to say that horror is finally back. In fact, new horror movies have started hitting theaters at such a steady rate that I didn’t have the proper time to review them all individually. To make it up to you all, here are some of my quick reflections on all of the horror films that I watched throughout the month of March.

‘The Sopranos’: Dressed to kill

By Laura Tickey April 3, 2024
HBO’s “The Sopranos” — arguably the best show of all time — tells the story of a mob family in North Jersey. Its content ranges from family dinners, men getting “whacked,” women gossiping, sex, drug deals and probably whatever other sleazy thing you can think of. Considering the show’s content, you may not think of “The Sopranos” as a point of interest for fashion inspiration. However, its premiere in 1999 proved that mobsters could indeed become style icons.

‘Madame Web’: A disgrace to the ‘Spider-Man’ franchise

By Keira Footer March 25, 2024
As a big fan of all things Spider-Man, especially “The Amazing Spider-Man” movie series, I was eager to watch the movie, despite the harsh backlash it received on social media. On a rainy Saturday afternoon, I watched “Madame Web.” How bad could it really be? Apparently, very bad.

Dissecting my highest-rated movies | Maia’s Inner Monologue

By Maia Penzer March 18, 2024
My attention span is not too long — I blame TikTok. After a taxing day of classes and schoolwork, "Modern Family" or "How I Met Your Mother" are my go-to choices for winding down. Movies require too much brainpower for me, and I usually need to be in a specific mood to watch them — or so I thought.

‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind’: Love and Memory

By Laura Tickey March 8, 2024
I first watched “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” when I was 10 years old. I admit that this was solely due to the fact that it was my mom’s response to the favorite movie question — and I became curious. At the time, I found the film hard to grasp with its vignettes of an adult relationship that depicted intimacy and heartbreak. Today, looking through the lens of a college student, I relate to this film more than ever.

Letterboxd: Leaving traditional social media for ‘reel’ this time

By Lea Tran March 6, 2024
The ability to connect with people when you’re unable to see them in real life gives me faith in the idea of social media. I don’t necessarily think all of it’s bad, but I wanted to find a different way to connect with friends beyond artificial photo updates. In the search for this new way to connect, I discovered Letterboxd: A social media app for film.

Four old movies for classic cinema beginners

By Lina Barclay March 4, 2024
I was sitting at the George Sherman Union the other day when an older gentleman approached me and asked about the sticker of actress Lauren Bacall pasted on the back of my laptop. After bonding over our shared love of Jean Arthur comedies from the 1930s, the man posed a question: How can we get more kids your age to watch old movies?

‘Bachelor Nation’: Maybe it isn’t so bad

By Amanda Brecher March 4, 2024
I am a new member of Bachelor Nation — and I have no shame. Every week, usually on Tuesday evenings, my friends and I gather to view the week's episode of “The Bachelor.” We set up a projector, light a few candles and pile into one bed as Joey Graziadei appears before us, projected onto a disoriented, partially unironed bedsheet.

‘Infinity Pool’ and drowning in art about the wealthy

By Josh Rosenthal February 3, 2023
If the recent season of “The White Lotus” was discomforting, then “Infinity Pool” feels like a transmission straight from a nightmare.

REVIEW: ‘Puss in Boots: The Last Wish’ lands on all fours

By Brendan Nordstrom February 1, 2023
The long-awaited sequel pits the titular character against his greatest enemy yet: himself. The catchy opening track proves ironic as Puss battles his anxieties about death and fragility.
