At first sight, BU doesn’t appear to have much green space. The school’s campus stretches for two-miles along Commonwealth Avenue, one of Boston’s busiest streets, giving it limited space for rolling fields, trees and meadows.
Although green space appears sparse, students and professors have found a variety of urban sanctuaries both on and off campus.
The city of Boston received a $1.8 million grant from the United States Department of Transportation last month which will prepare to put in a green space to connect and improve a divided Chinatown.
Mayor Marty Walsh announced the two firms selected to head Boston’s first Urban Forest Plan — a 20-year project focused on protecting the city’s trees, addressing climate change and improving the overall lives of Boston residents.
Biking paths in Boston can be narrow, close to busy roads and devoid of protective barriers. To solve this issue, LivableStreets Alliance is striving to create 200 miles of shared-use “greenway” bike paths in the city by 2030.
With devastating nor’easters and April showers that now include snowfall, Boston’s weather has been a microcosm of broader climate change.
