In your hometown, you can’t even go to the grocery store without running into someone who knows your mom. But on spring break? You’re just another face in the crowd of frat bros, beach bums and vacationers who will never cross your path again. What happens on the beach stays on the beach — or so they tell themselves.
Whether you're traveling somewhere warm, heading home or staying in Boston, I want to encourage everyone — no matter how busy you might still be — to take spring break as an opportunity to do the same as me and take some time for yourself. I’ve picked some relaxing songs with spring vibes to get into that fresh start and warmer weather mindset.
Maybe I’ll wake up without an alarm, make a good breakfast, take a relaxing bath and tick off things from my spring break bucket list. Of course, there will be moments where I’ll wish I was home, but I’ll remind myself that I’ll be okay. And above all, I’ll take it one day at a time.
I’m worried that something similar might happen when I return from college. Instead of feeling comfortable and relieved, I’ll feel unfamiliar and awkward, like I’m staying at a friend’s house for a week before I return to Boston. I’ve often heard sayings such as “home is where the heart is,” but how am I supposed to call this new place “home” without the proper time to love it?
But growing is inevitable, regardless of where you are. We have this mentality that we must evolve or die, but evolving doesn’t mean changing your life dramatically. We evolve in little ways every day— even if it’s in the courage it takes to live at home.
It may sound cheesy, but it’s all true. To all of the incoming freshmen, transfer students and incoming seniors — I still can’t believe that I’m one of those — you have plenty of time. You are not behind. Learn to enjoy the passing of time and try not to rush into a life that you feel others expect of you. If all else fails, dancing and singing with friends is always a good idea.
This semester, I decided to join the CELOP Conversation Partner Program. My initial intention was to improve my language abilities, but I’ve also gained something much more valuable: a close friend.
With the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday and school break, I’ve found myself in much need of a break from school, but mildly stressed about how to travel 400 miles home for this shorter break. While I can make it home in a day, it poses a bit of a challenge trying to coordinate how exactly I will get home. And for some of my friends who live even farther away, the short break means it would be impossible to go home due to distance and coordinating travel plans.
In this household devoid of literacy, where no one could distinguish the difference between simple Chinese characters like “己” and “已” an unexpected obsession cultivated within a young boy — my brother.
